We have been architects, surveyors and lead consultants to Lincoln Cathedral since 1996. We provide a range of services including advising on policy, setting budgets, obtaining statutory consents and applying for, negotiating and liaison on grants. We manage the design, specification and contract administration of work on the Grade I Cathedral Church and properties in the Cathedral Close (50+ houses, many listed Grade I & II*). This involves liaison with local authorities and carrying out Quinquennial Inspections and Feasibility Studies for new visitor facilities. There is an ongoing programme of conservation and repair at the Cathedral to the value of £1.2M per annum. This includes conservation and repair of external masonry and stained glass windows, re-roofing and timber repairs. Masonry repairs regularly involve rectified photography of the area to be considered allowing us to accurately draw up the facade stone by stone. If stones need replacing we often find that the original is no longer quarried and therefore a close match to the original stone must be located. We have been engaged on the re-roofing program continuously for almost 25 years. The works have included an intensive program of stripping existing leadwork and boarding and carrying out repairs to timbers, some of which are mediaeval timbers dating from the 13th century. We have also undertaken the task of reforming gutters, removing old boarding and reboarding. Currently the project is conducting renewal works on the west aisle of the south east transept, with works undertaken by our own team of joiners and leadworkers. In addition to the rolling programme of works we undertake important projects that are individually funded. The Dean’s Eye Window was a very significant restoration project which saw the mediaeval rose window (one of the few originals to remain in Europe) conserved with the employment of the latest technical knowledge and matched with first class craftsmanship. The mediaeval glass and the carved stone tracery were removed, the former conserved and the latter replaced like for like. The tracery was re-created with a new steel structure internally that strengthened the window and indeed the whole facade. A new outer clear glazed layer was created that exactly replicated the stained glass inner, and the original glass was hung to the inside. This new double glazed effect protects the mediaeval glass but is not observed by the naked eye. Value: £2.2M completed: 2006. We converted The Old Sub-Deanery, a Grade I Listed residential property in the Cathedral Yard. The building is a very sensitive mediaeval property and required restoration works including roof repairs and masonry repairs before internal refurbishment took place. The hallway has a striking double stair that leads up to an overhanging timber balcony. These two structures required restoration and, with the change of use to a community and commercial venture, strengthening as floors loads were to increase greatly. A new steel structure was carefully inserted to the original timber, carefully detailed to be invisible to the eye. The Centre is promoted by the cathedral for a variety of purposes, such as business meetings, lectures, private functions, corporate and VIP receptions, offering them important additional revenue. We provided new build toilets that sit within the curtilage of the cathedral. A very sensitive new build project delivered to a high quality. Value: £1M, completed: 2010.
