Blair Gratton Architects Ltd

29 York Street , Derby , Derbyshire , DE1 1FZ , United Kingdom

Completed in 2018 is the Blair Gratton Architects designed sustainable rear extension to a semi-detached home. The extension offers 4 additional accessible spaces to the ground floor of their home. A lobby opens up to the garden and a downstairs bathroom/shower room. An existing garden shed is replaced with a new workshop, offering more comfortable surroundings for the clients to pursue their hobbies. A bespoke ‘Garden Room’ is created to take advantage of the garden sun, even in colder weather. Sustainable elements are a key factor in the design. A sedum green roof mitigates storm water and provides a more aesthetically pleasing roof. A lightweight timber frame is clad in sustainable Larch pine timber. Weathering to the larch will be visible over time, as the wood turns silver-grey (see above image where this is evident already). A year on, the green roof has become a mixture of eye-catching pastel colours. Two flint panels – set into the brick – are a decorative and more personal feature of the extension. They preserve and evoke memories of the flint aesthetics of Norfolk, a part of the country close to the clients hearts and something they were keen on incorporating into the design. The clients are delighted with their finished project, as are we. It is very satisfying to see their vision become a reality, which is what we strive to accomplish at Blair Gratton Architects.
