Sited in AONB, New Build
Downley House is a large new country house built in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in East Hampshire. The brief called for a tranquil yet playful place, full of natural texture, contrasts, and indigenous materials. BPR’s design divides the house into two wings: One for the family and one for guests, linked by a large curved dining hall. The ruined wall of the old house is retained and used as an architectural screen and folly, as part of a sequence of spaces from the circular arrival courtyard throu the house and beyond to the landscape. The structure of the house is constructed from cross laminated timber (CLT) panels, pre-fabricated in a Swiss factory and quicklly craned into place on site. The CLT structure is clad in stone, timber and render, with paved roof terraces and green sedum roofs either side of the curving copper roof that covers the dining hall.
