About the practice

Barefoot architects is an award winning RIBA Chartered Practice led by Directors Sam Goss and Rob Hankey. We hold degrees in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Product Design and are both ARB registered Architects. We specialise in homes, housing and community projects of a variety of scales with expertise in community-led, participative co-design work. We are based at the Paintworks in Bristol, and work across the South of England and Wales. We set up Barefoot Architects to influence the industry and empower communities and individuals to build a better future for themselves. We offer contemporary design that is forward thinking; socially and environmentally aware. Our core values are to work in harmony with People, Place, and Planet. Full of creative ideas, enthusiasm and energy, we make the design process fun and collaborative for everyone involved. Our practice approach is to provide professional services to a range of clients and communities needing support. We are working on a diverse range of community led housing projects including several cohousing schemes. We have experience of different development approaches, and economic viability models for this type of project. We are design-led, but cost conscious; realistic about budgets and offer clear fee structures. Our current projects range in scale from £150k - £8.5m. Clients include Cohousing Groups, Individual Families, CLT’s, Councils (on frameworks), Housing Associations, Contractors, and Developers.
