Transforming a cramped and badly treated traditional townhouse into light-filled home, the aim was to bring the property into modern use through the transformation into an open plan home designed for city living. Additions of rooflights, structural changes to open up the plan on all floors, and uncovering (or restoring) original elements of the project helped to make reinvent this unloved plot for another century. The key concept centred around the ground floor embracing the traditional nature of the property; cornicing, turned stair spindles, high skirting boards and parquet, and subtly loose this as you traverse up the building, to modern rooms, with a see through shower room, and a raked ceilings to bring a sense of height to the rooms.
