Paxton House is the renovation and extension of a derelict 1960s concrete frame building, converted to contain 43 homes alongside a series of shared spaces. The scheme utilises a unique layout to ensure all apartments gain a S or SW facing living space and balcony. The rectification of the existing building has overcome issues of an awkward building footprint, tight site and technical issues to create a piece of architecture that is innovative to the sector, of value to the user and the wider area alike and critically, durable. Flats are arranged as couplets; neighbours thus share private lobbies, allowing for slim proportioned flats without constraining any key living spaces. These paired flats re-introduce the neighbour relationship into multi-unit design, aiming to foster a sense of community within the building. Innovative design approaches are used to control privacy within the block, from the material choices (Walkways adopt the chipped rubber typical of playgrounds, ensuring total acoustic dampening) to the building form (the angled balcony forms are designed to respond to multiple site privacy constraints) The project won the 2018 Architects' Journal Retrofit Award for Best Housing Under £5m, and the 2019 First Time Buyer's Best Apartment Award.
