Chandos East Community Centre is part of the relocation activity arising from the Olympic development. The new centre extends the facilities available to older community members at the existing adjacent Chandos Centre to include children and young people. The new building is located in an existing open space and creates a shared garden and secure territory for the building itself, whilst increasing security to adjacent houses. The scale and nature of the building create a welcoming entrance whilst also responding to the security demands of this open site. The building is visually connected to the ground with a cladding of dark (almost black) brickwork with moments of bright colour from its interior revealed at entrances and window recesses. A series of clearly defined rooms all fronting onto private gardens open off a central top lit hall. In line with the Mayors plan for sustainable development all aspects of the proposal are considered for their environmental qualities and include a green roof, ground source heat pump and super-insulated breathing wall system. The project also proposes a masterplan for the wider open space leading to improvements and anew playground, in addition to remedial work to the existng 1980's building.
