This well-established community school is a late example of a Victorian board school which has real presence and impact on the character of the local area. This project arose from the need to provide Children's Centre facilities within ground floor and external areas of the school which were also in need of refurbishment. The project provides new community drop-in facilities for local families, some wrap-around care for nursery children and facilites for school holiday activities and childcare. The centre will also provide spaces for associated health and counselling services. A series of insertions were carried out in such a way as to retain the spatial qualities already existing whilst creating a series of legible and delightful new spaces which would give a sense of new identity at this important change in the school's activities. At the same time robust and long-term improvements were made to the building fabric including structural alterations to create new facilities. The design seeks to engage with the relationship of indoor and outdoor spaces creating external rooms. A strategy of overlaying a new layer of strong secondary colour elements is a response to the existing strong palette of materials and introduces moments of delight.
