BRIEF A new entrance to welcome visitors to the Kate Greenaway Nursery School and Children's Centre, providing enough space for buggy and bike storage, with views into the reception area. The brief also included a new art workshop, re-cladding the existing building, and internal alterations to create a reception office, a larger kitchen and refurbished toilets. LOCAL AUTHORITY London Borough of Islington Planning permission obtained STRATEGY The boundary fence was completely rebuilt to provide varying degrees of transparency: a brick wall and close-boarded fence provide privacy to the children£s garden, whilst the transparent central section allows views through to the entrance. The art workshop is located behind the brick wall, with high level lighting that is allowed to spill out into the street at night. MATERIALS Brickwork, Douglas Fir structure, Western Red cedar cladding, proprietary fence panels on Douglas Fir posts, and polycarbonate roofing. The project was shortlisted for the RIBA London Awards 2009.
