Our clients recently downsized to a beautiful farm within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the Kent countryside. A Grade II listed sixteenth-century farmhouse forms the focal point of a group of barns arranged around a courtyard, each reflecting layers of historic use. YSA designed a scheme to add a dining space, reconfigure interiors, and maintain connections between the expansive Down views and the enclosed courtyard. Subtle interventions in the existing fabric were undertaken to introduce light into otherwise dark rooms, with new windows and rooflights carefully introduced to illuminate the kitchen as the focal point of the home. External materials—timber, corten and zinc—will weather over time. Internally, a restrained palette and crafted extended thresholds connect spaces, guiding movement and framing varied views of the countryside and internal courtyard.
