New Build
John Godber, the leading playwright, was clear in his requirements for the new home for Hull Truck Theatre Company: it should be a building “deeply rooted in Hull” that resonates clearly with “the broader historical, architectural, and cultural context” whilst maintaining the intimacy and feel of Hull Truck’s original makeshift home, in a converted warehouse on Spring Street. Our aim was to deliver a theatre that met with these aspirations. Brick was used to situate the building amidst the grand warehouses of Hull, while a fully glazed foyer dissolves the barrier between the bars and café inside with the street and newly created square outside; thereby connecting the life of the theatre with that of the city. Performance spaces have innovative environmental solutions, and were designed to reflect the sight lines and intimate feel of the original Hull Truck theatre. The main auditorium seats 450 and the flexible studio theatre holds 150, both use passive ventilation and low energy heating solutions. Max Fordham LLP, the services engineers for the project; believe it to be the greenest theatre built to date in the UK. “It’s not only about the bricks and mortar, it’s about the character of the place. It is an outstanding scheme that has not only enhanced it’s local surroundings and it’s architecture, but by focusing on the principles of cohesive design, it has become a real part of the community.” Civic Trust Award Citation
