RENOVATION and EXTENSION of a 1920’s BUTTERFLY PLAN HOUSE in KENT Working closely with the client, a number of key interventions have been carried out in sympathy with the building's Arts and Craft tradition - balancing newly designed contemporary spaces, with the spirit and character of the original. The layout of this unusual 'butterfly plan' house was re-modelled to open up key spaces, provide a positive flow between interior spaces and a strong connection with outside. At the heart of the house, a new open living and dining area - with the kitchen at its hub - gives the client the social space for extended family to gather. This includes a new extension with full height glazed walls cantilevered over the sloping garden to heighten its elevated position. Orientated to take full advantage of both woodland and far reaching views, it opens out to a new raised external dining space. The contemporary extension has been designed to both contrast and preserve the unusual form of the original building - to complement rather than replicate. A top lit open roof space catches the sun. In the driveway a new serpentine wall connects the garage to a covered porch. On first arriving this curvy wall leads a guest to the main entrance whilst providing added security and privacy. On the strength of this project, work was commissioned for the reconfiguration and extension of a neighbouring property for which planning permission was granted following negotiation with Ashford Planning department.
