This bold domestic project extends a Grade II listed property within the grounds of a former Benedictine priory and a scheduled Ancient Monument. Within this historic context, a contemporary new garden room extends into the garden replacing a previous unsuccessful conservatory. The building itself, whilst contemporary in form, utilises the very best of traditional materials and craftsmanship - flintwork echoes the historic walls of the ancient monument, whilst green aged copper, laid by traditional methods, gives the property a unique appearance within the verdant landscape. Internally, the room is filled with natural light from above, whilst an intricate oak strip ceiling and window joinery lends warmth to the space and craftsmanship with a 'furniture-like' level of care. The space itself - whilst modest - transforms the layout and function of the home, offering a much needed rear entrance from the garden and an informal family room accessed from both the kitchen and drawing room. Whilst a woodburning stove offers ample heating in winter, large glass screens may be opened in summer beneath a generous extended canopy, where the oak strip ceiling extends above the covered terrace.
