Under construction, Woldon obtained planning and listed building consents for a new house and cottage in the walled garden of Noseley Hall, Leicestershire. The proposals replace a large amount of ad hoc twentieth century development located in a highly attractive south-facing location at the top of the Hall’s walled garden, beside a Grade I listed chapel. A new house of approximately 6,000sqft incorporates a refurbished former Gardener’s Cottage located on the central axis of the garden. Single storey reception spaces are housed within the walled garden to establish a direct link to the gardens and wider landscape. A two-storey structure sits quietly behind the historic garden walls with accommodation and living space arranged to form a continuous sequence of spaces from the Gardener’s Cottage. A combination of carefully selected bricks and bronze roofing is proposed for new structures to provide a material palette which works with the existing garden walls. The project entailed extensive consultation with Historic England and the local planning authority, as well as successful navigation through a complex web of ecological constraints.
