Portelet House is a large single dwelling with a net internal floor area of just over 806 sq m. The house is built in a traditional Regency style with a shallow pitched natural slate roof and rendered walls. It has a mixture of timber sash and French windows. The house is cut into the natural slope of the headland, above tiered terrace lawns and formal gardens. The natural lie of the site means the house is a storey higher at the south-east side, where it faces the sea. Whilst traditionally styled, the house is extensively modern and dates primarily from the latter half of the twentieth century. The site was first developed in the 1880’s with a significantly smaller house, of which only fragments survive. The approach to the design for remodelling Portelet House recognises the importance of the building as a prominent coastal feature within the boundary of a Zone of Outstanding Character. The confident Regency style is the key characteristic of the house and it is one which will be maintained and enhanced by the proposed works. The remodelling aims to address the weaknesses in the current design both inside and out. The internal arrangement of rooms is formalised, with all principal rooms given a sea-facing aspect. The principal facade is re-ordered to create true symmetry and to follow stricter classical proportions that one would typically expect from Regency design. New window openings are double square, golden rectangle or square in proportion and the ratio of window to wall is increased to give the elevation more balance. Close detailing is also improved with the introduction of cornice and architrave profiles from the Tuscan order. The house will be re-rendered in a lime rich white stucco render with scribed ashlar joints. Granite will be used for window sills and external architraves and door surrounds to give the design a more traditional Jersey flavour. The existing roof line is maintained and the house will be re-roofed in natural Welsh slate with lead roll hip and ridge as the current design. Chimneys will be rebuilt and finished in stucco render with granite caps. Windows and doors will be constructed in hardwood and will be painted externally. The new windows will be traditional boxed sashes with double glazed units and applied glazing bars.
