The Proposed Studio The proposed new structure will replace the existing greenhouse, located on a terrace immediately below and to the south of Portelet House. The new building will be ancillary to the main house and will be used as an artist studio and garden pavilion. The Studio is designed as a sculptural interpretation of a wave breaking over a sea wall. The wave is represented by a sweeping copper roof (centre) which rises above and is on the point of engulfing a smaller granite mass, representing the sea wall (west). The wave form is continued beyond the building (east) by a curved screen, constructed with core 10 steel columns rising from a reflecting pool. The core 10 wall incorporates water spouts playing onto the reflecting pool. Access is gained to the building via a natural stone pathway bridging over the pool. The building has been designed to respect the sensitive nature of the site as an important Island vista and Zone of Outstanding Character. Despite their industrial origins, both copper and core 10 steel have an organic quality as their surfaces evolve with age. The copper, initially bright and striking will quickly settle through light brown to dark brown, finally taking on a green verdigris lustre. The core 10 steel will rapidly rust to a coarse reddish-brown that will blend beautifully with the local granite walls. Local granite will be used to construct the east portion of the building. The large structural glass wall at the front of the building (south) is designed to slope forward at an angle of five degrees in order to reduce reflection and thus dramatically reduce the impact of the building when viewed from the more distant cliff views. Reflected sunlight is further reduced by the large and irregular roof overhang which is deeper on this side of the building (south-west) where late afternoon sun is more problematic. While the designation for the site as a Zone of Outstanding Character sets a presumption against new development, the Studio will enhance the architectural quality of Portelet Bay,
