Modernisation of 2 college complexes comprising student accommodation of flats, studio flats and study rooms with associated facilities, requiring extensive re-planning to upgrade both public areas and accommodation. All newly formed study bedrooms were provided with en-suite facilities, accessible studio flats and rooms were added at ground level off a newly remodelled reception area and a 2-storey extension added, with 54 additional study bedrooms and 2 studio flats. Existing private courtyards were redesigned with improved security and lighting; the west courtyard now incorporates a new garden terrace and cycle parking and the east courtyard is landscaped and has a specially commissioned water feature chalice. Sustainability and energy savings were at the heart of the scheme; the new extension includes an area of green roof and photovoltaic panels. Mechanical and electrical services and safety infrastructure were upgraded throughout. Works were also carried out to the external fabric of the building; the brickwork cleaned, other elements repaired, refurbished and renewed.
