Brownfield site, New Build, Sited in AONB, Sited in Greenbelt land
Williams Lester Architects designed this development of 18 Arts and Crafts houses near Churt, on the edge of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Inspired by the work of Sir Edwin Lutyens, the homes feature steep tiled roofs, prominent brick chimneys and generous eaves. Built on the site of a derelict former nursery, the scheme replaced decaying glasshouses with sensitively designed housing, including two affordable homes. Despite being contrary to planning policy in an AONB and Green Belt, WLA secured approval by demonstrating reduced built form, improved landscape impact, biodiversity enhancements and extensive indigenous planting.
