This project was won in a limited design competition. The brief called for a 250 seat theatre, an activities hall and lettable rooms for the community centre. The brief proposed stacking the accommodation vertically. Our response was to look at the wider site holistically to achieve the required accommodation in a pair of blocks side by side separated by a central indoor street. The street serves as reception, foyer and point of access to all facilities, allowing the building to be maintained with variable staff levels. The building reflects local urban forms and details in a modern design. The arts centre along with the existing library and community centre forms a cultural campus in the town, with a new pedestrian square at its heart.
