Williams Lester were invited by the client to enter a limited design competition for new church facilities at Christ Church in Westbourne. The brief was for a new hall to replace a dilapidated prefab hall from the 1940s. The site is very tight, and the space available restricted by the church and boundaries. A further complication was that the church needed to remain in use throughout the construction process. Our solution provides flexible community spaces and office accommodation for the church while improving circulation between the retained church and the new hall. The hall is linked to the church by a glazed atrium, allowing the church to be read clearly from the new building while making minimal sympathetic interventions in the historic church fabric. The opportunity was taken to refurbish the church building and undertake much needed restoration.
