Alteration to existing property, Sited in AONB, Within a Conservation Area
Rushers Cross is a project founded on re-use of a site of a former pastoral farm complex composed of redundant early 20th century agricultural barns and lean-too structures floating within a sea of concrete hardstanding, located within the High Weald area of outstanding natural beauty. The brief called for the full removal and replacement of these buildings with a contemporary dwelling specifically situated to take maximum advantage of the site’s elevated position, sloping topography and beautiful long distance views over the rolling Sussex countryside. Leaving the concrete frame exposed internally within the double height living spaces and cladding the buildings externally in agricultural profiled metal and black stained timber, the buildings maintain an honest and appropriate aesthetic creating a spacious dwelling that is specific to place and expressive of its agricultural heritage.
