Newcastle under Lyme
£5m to £9.99M
New Build
This is a project jointly funded by Newcastle under Lyme Borough Council and the Local Primary Care Trust. The objective is to contribute to an improvement in lifestyle for the community in Newcastle, including impacting on such issues as child obesity. William Saunders were appointed as architects, lead consultant and design team leaders following a competitive interview and tender in 2009. The building is located on an inner-urban site, close to the town centre of Newcastle under Lyme. It is bounded on three sides by busy roads, including the main A52 trunk road, and on the forth side by the existing Jubilee baths, to be demolished following completion of the new centre. The building incorporates a 25m swimming pool, learner pool with Aqua gym facilities, martial arts studios, fitness centre, health suite and a dedicated children’s activity and fitness area. There are also facilities for PCT use referral spaces, etc and the building has been designed to link to a phase 2 development in the future situated on the Jubilee bath site. The second phase is expected to be a PCT facility. William Saunders were selected for the commission as they presented a vision for both phases in the form of an integrated lifestyle centre. The following key objectives were set for the project: The creation of an inclusive facility which would encourage all members of the community to participate in sport and active leisure activities. To support the outreach work by the PCT in promoting healthier lifestyles. To create an attractive, prominent building on a very tight urban site. To engender a sense of ownership by the community.
