The Centre for Infection and Immunology [CII] at the University of York provides research offices and laboratories housing approximately 150 staff and graduate research students, and is located adjacent to the existing Immunology and Infection Unit at the Heslington West Campus. The building will enhance the profile of the University of York and will help place it at the forefront of research into immunology and disease. The 1,885sq/m building accommodates research laboratories, academics offices, and post graduate write up areas. Internal space planning to ensure natural lighting and ventilation were capitalised throughout the facility had to be sensitively managed, as areas such as laboratories, offices and write up areas which have very different environmental requirements. The CII’s elevations are designed to reflect the highly scientific processes within the building whilst simultaneously creating a soft, natural aesthetic using a timber rain screen cladding to external walls at first and second floors. The south and west facing elevations solar shading is a continuation of the horizontal cedar slats which form bris soleil. A robust blue engineering ‘plinth’ and white render finish to the ground floor elevations provide a clinical aesthetic, as does the glazed curtain walling to the east. Sustainable principles were integrated into the design at an early stage to ensure that the building achieved a BREEAM rating of very good. These comprise of the following: 1.Maximisation of natural light into all spaces 2.Maximisation of passive ventilation into all spaces (except laboratories which require a controlled environment) 3.Use of centre pivot windows to aid passive ventilation 4.Minimisation of solar gains, through solar shading on the south and west sides of the building. 5.High levels of thermal insulation in excess of Building regulations. 6.Use of timber from sustainable sources. 7.Use of energy efficient lighting 8.Water saving fixtures and fittings Wm Saunders Partnership were commissioned as Architects on the Centre for Infection and Immunology [CII] through its framework with the University and the CII joins a portfolio of work that the practice have completed on Campus.
