Whittaker Parsons were approached in 2018 by the owners of this Victorian terrace in the Medway Conservation Area, Mile End, to create a roof and side extension suitable for their growing family, along with a complete internal refurbishment of the existing property. Downstairs a single storey side extension creates a full-width kitchen and dining room, constructed from exposed London stock and white glazed brickwork, exposed steelwork and concrete screed. Bamboo joinery lines the remainder of the space, resulting in a rich and honest expression of its construction. The connection to the rear courtyard garden has been dramatically improved, blurring the line between inside and outdoor space. The existing reception rooms and bedrooms have been fully renovated, retaining their period features and the basement upgraded to a dry storage space. The slate and lead clad double-pitch mansard roof extension creates space for a double bedroom with bamboo joinery and a cork floor that runs into a generous en-suite shower room with views towards Canary Wharf. The new volumes have been carefully balanced to contrast with the original rooms in the house, to feel generous and light. The new staircase and internal glazing create a feeling of openness and result in unexpected views through the property while maintaining acoustic privacy.
