Alteration to existing property, Brownfield site
White Ink Architects Limited , 4th Floor , 21 Talbot Street , BELFAST , County Antrim , BT1 2LD , United Kingdom
White Ink Architects worked with GRAHAM Construction to deliver the refurbished and extended School of Mathematical Sciences building - developing the original design intent through Stage 4 and deliver the project on site under a Design and Build Contract. The initial brief, developed by Kendall Kingscott Architects, was to create a striking urban landmark building which would enhance the presence of the University along Mile End Road and afford a more welcoming western ‘gateway’ entrance to the campus. The intention was to work within the existing structure to optimise the spaces within; improve the performance (thermal and energy) of the building; improve user experience and inspire a new lease of life within the school. Key works included the refurbishment of the existing 1960’s brutalist concrete building comprising replacement of the building envelope (façade and roof), complete interior fit-out. An extension at basement level within a sunken yard to the rear provides a bright, airy social space around a landscaped courtyard, and modest extensions clipped on to either side of the circulation core provide much needed break-out spaces and tutorial rooms - clad in frameless curtain walling to further emphasise verticality and celebrate the magnificent views back to the City of London. User experience and sustainability were key considerations in order to achieve an enjoyable, productive working environment – synonymous with one of the world’s leading Mathematics institutions. The project achieved BREEAM excellent.
