The Royal Arsenal Woolwich Crossrail Station site sits within the London Borough of Greenwich and is part of the historic site of the Royal Arsenal. The Royal Arsenal site has a long military history dating back to the 16th century. Royal Arsenal Woolwich is a sub-surface box station, 276m long and between 22.4m and 26.6m wide, which comprises a 245m long island platform, a new ticket hall to the West and a fire fighting / ventilation shaft to the east. The station is being developed in coordination with the masterplan for the Royal Arsenal by Berkeley Homes. Negotiating with Crossrail, private developers and the local authority has been a major part of this project delivery. This successful negotiation and integration of the parts has enabled a quality design to be delivered with the backing of parties. The station’s west end is designed such that the entrance has a significant presence on Plumstead Road as well as a presence on Dial Arch Square. This strategy recognizes the importance of the Plumstead Road approach in providing a strong link to the town centre. Local urban design initiatives, some of them already achieved, reinforce this strategy. The station’s east-west orientation dictates the location of the other entrance towards Dial Arch Square. Over the escalators a full height glazed wall provides natural light and views through the station. This feature enlivens the street, particularly at night when the station lights will contribute to the external lighting. It also provides a strong visual connection between the proposed development to the west and Dial Arch Square.
