Our design for the Arched Window Extension was inspired by the beautiful Arts and Crafts character of this original Ted Christmas house in Forest Hill, South East London. Ted Christmas was a local late Victorian period builder renowned for the quality of the houses he constructed. On our initial visit to the property, we were moved in particular by the beautiful curved form of the bay window in the rear reception room of the house with its arched window joinery details. That window inspired a desire to design the requested new extension for the house as a contemporary take on the arts and crafts style, creating a masonry box punctuated with glazed openings which would be a visual exploration on the form of the arch. The resulting design is for a single-story, rear extension an open plan ground floor, which replaces the previous poorly lit outrigger and separated reception rooms and creates a new ‘hub of the home’ an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living space which meets the practical requirements of this family and creates the opportunity for the whole family to be together and live in a modern way. The new extension also provides much improved natural light and connection to nature through improved views of the garden which supports their mental and physical wellbeing in line with Wellstudio’s design ethos. A Palette of carefully chosen complimentary materials was used on the project; Aluminium curtain wall glazing with a golden brown metallic finish matched with reclaimed yellow London stock brick in keeping with the original house, white lime coloured mortar, medium brown coloured oak herringbone flooring and white marble worktop with grey cabinets and brown timber clad island.
