New Build
2 Mill Walk , Wheathampstead , ST. ALBANS , Hertfordshire , AL4 8DT , United Kingdom
Award-winning new-build church for 300+ with linked parish centre, day chapel and prayer meeting room. Extensive landscaping and car parking for 63 cars+ garage. Church is an 'antiphonal' church - insofar as the liturgy (the ceremony) takes place along the length of the church. Not so much as a 'church in the round' as a 'church in the long..'. This was at the request of the parish. It is the first new-build antiphonal church in the region. The shape of the liturgy gives rise to some architectural challenges - the ellipse suits the form of worship best - but this is particularly challenging in trying to put a conventional roof on top. The Diocese requires construction to be relatively traditional to allow for ease of repairs in the future. The slate roof with timber structural decking floats above the walls and a long rooflight - deliberately 'baffled' by the structure - brings naural light to the worship area. The floor is sloped down to the Sanctuary area - there are no steps to negotiate and the font is wheelchair accessible. All the masonry was built using natural hydraulic lime - for environmental and aesthetic reasons. Carved and gilded doors open out as a portal into the Blessed Sacrament Chapel with a dramatic stained-glass cross right next to the road. This also acts as a day-chapel - the doors are closed to separate the chapel from the church. Stained glass oval windows at each end of the church - signifying the Annunciation and the Resurrection - the beginning and end of Christ's life on this earth. Around the perimeter of the church are 3 sets of triplet windows depicting three saints. We designed the sanctuary furniture and the pews. The zinc-roofed parish centre is designed to divide into two rooms and has an oak boarded floor. Despite the high specification and large extent of external works, the church was not expensive. It won the 2006 RIBA East Spirit of Ingenuity Award for a Community Building and was a runner-up in the National Brick Awards.
