WATG

Red Bull Building Level 3 , 42 Earlham Street , LONDON , WC2H 9LA

The design challenge was to convert a copra plantation in a remote location into an exclusive private resort using traditional materials, while being sensitive to nature and the environment and respecting the Fijian vernacular. The solution takes the traditional thatch hut, turns it on its head, allows trees to grow through roofs and rooms to enter landscapes. It includes a series of single-storey buildings nestled deep into the landscape, every now and then emerging from the undergrowth. WATG placed a full-time site and work force was on site, totaling more than 1,000 people during the design and final construction stages. WATG also worked closely with the regional community in providing not only work opportunities, but ensuring a genuine design aesthetic.
