Walters & Cohen's simple rectilinear building for the KwaZulu Natal Society of Arts encloses three interlinked volumes: the gallery, a shop and workshops. A stepped circulation route rises gradually along the edge of the building, providing access to the three main volumes. Articulated timber screens along the circulation route create a 'verandah' and allow the building to open up to the outside, drawing in vital breezes to aid cross ventilation. The siting of the building in relation to Bulwer Park creates a garden between the new gallery and an existing building.
