The Practice was commissioned in 2011 by a private healthcare Client to design a scheme for an extension and internal alterations to the existing Home (a former Vicarage), to provide an additional 29 new rooms with en-suite facilities on a sloping site enclosed by mature trees. The Local Authority would only allow a single storey extension to preserve the character and hierarchy of the existing Vicarage, which was to remain as the feature building. The natural topography was therefore exploited to create a Lower Ground Floor level which is not apparent from the entrance elevation, but from the rear is a two storey building with views across open countryside and an enclosed garden. A contemporary approach was adopted in the design of the elevations, which helps to emphasise the importance and character of the original building. Planning approval was granted in April 2012.
