A masterplan including an energy strategy and community-focused proposals for 150 new and refurbished homes on the old Plaistow Hospital Site in Newham, East London. Collaborating with architects Weston Williamson + Partners and environmental consultancy Element Energy, our competition entry was in the 20 selected out of 139 submissions to be exhibited at the New London Architecture exhibition space at The Building Centre. Enabling a community to flourish was the focus of the scheme; speaking to neighbours and understanding local needs before thinking about architecture, form or public space. We set out to build communities as well as housing, spaces and services. This started with an analysis of the context of the site and resulted in the proposal of a variety of house types, an energy centre, a public park, community services and facilities. The premise was not to try and force social engagement but to put forward the right conditions to allow it to evolve.
