New Build
A new national laboratory for quality control and research and development of cement and concrete products. Very specific requirements for preparation, cleaning and physical testing of samples as well as for chemical analysis led to a design which placed the heavy processes on the ground floor whilst locating the chemistry and particulates laboratories at first floor level. The building has a total floor area of 820m² plus outbuildings, plant areas and external facilities. A sensitive design was required as the site is on the edge of the Peak District National Park. Flat panelled cladding and strip windows to the upper level contrast with the more rustic treatment to the ground level. The roof geometry reflects the profile of the valley on which the building is sited and also serves to conceal the external plant necessary to serve the laboratories.
