Kensington and Chelsea
Our client could not afford to move but had outgrown the existing compact 2 bedroom flat in a mid-terrace property resulting in full flat refurbishment in Oxford Gardens Conservation Area in Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC). The client's brief was to refurbish the property and add another bedroom if possible. Through careful interrogation of the section through the outrigger, we were able to squeeze in a new bedroom with additional storage. To do so we lowered the ceiling in the corridor bathroom and installed a shallow floor structure to maximise the space both in and below the room. The addition of the extra bedroom allowed the clients to continue to live in the area, where they have established roots. By opening up cellular living spaces and removing the redundant ceiling under an existing loft conversion, we were able to create a modern open plan living space with a featured stair. The extra height adds a grandeur not seen in similar properties in the area. All the materials were chosen for their ''Wabi-Sabi'' appeal. A palette of Blackened steel and oiled black Valchromat contrasting with the white concrete and light walls form the basis of the design which gave the house a strong monochromatic graphic. The simplicity of the processing of the materials allowed our client to work with the blacksmith to prepare and blacken the stairs himself, connecting him with the process of designing and building their own home. We focused on the little details to deliver a wonderful set of spaces that were elegant yet cost effective.
