Urban and Rural were appointed to lead the interior and exterior transformation of a poorly extended and refurbished heritage building on the Kent Coastline. Urban and Rural worked closely with the new owners to develop a list of project aspirations, which were developed in tandem with the design team to reimagine the interior layout, create additional bedrooms and add a new kitchen dining area and a more dynamic living area. The building is located at a key location in the local conservation area and is part of a locally significant collection of historic structures. An important part of the brief was to rediscover the lost heritage character and potential of the existing building and therefore enhance the local setting through the application of a series sensitive new adaptions and insertions. This included the removal of all the uPVC windows and doors which were replaced with heritage aluminum, re-roofing the building with natural slate, and the removal of the poorly constructed glazed lean-too which was causing the building to overheat in the summer. The new extension was constructed using the local flint, with lime mortar joints, to reflect the local vernacular. A new picture window was created in the primary bedroom, to gain a stunning sea view, which was previously absent from the first floor. Urban and Rural worked closely with Carden and Cunietti to deliver a bespoke interior which reflected the new owners style and complimented the overarching architectural approach. Marcus Foster Landscape Designs input was integral in the approach that was adopted for garden dining space, which included a sustainable urban drainage system to control surface water on site.
