Listed Building - Grade II, New Build
Tyack Architects Ltd , The Mann Institute , Oxford Street , Moreton-in-Marsh , Gloucestershire , GL56 0LA , United Kingdom
The Manor Farm Barns development has re-invented an unattractive courtyard cluster of farm buildings, turning them into a contemporary new dwelling. A group of Listed stone barns and stables had become unrecognisable following the piecemeal addition of modern extensions and unsympathetic re-ordering. The stripping away of extensions and careful insertion of three new linking elements enable the reinstated historic structures to be connected. The glazed links create both the visual separation demanded from the conservation officer and the defining transitional spaces that tie the contrasting volumes together. A consistent approach to the detail design and choice of finishing materials unifies the series of contrasting internal spaces. The historic barn interiors leave natural stone walls exposed and express the pegs and jointing of traditional oak-frame roof construction; similarly, I-beams, bespoke metal cleats and tie-rod connectors are expressed in the structure of the modern roofs - the industrial character echoed in the use of a polished concrete floor finish. A sensitive approach to the conversion has succeeded in preserving the character of the Listed buildings, enhancing their setting in the process, and creating an attractive and distinctive family home.
