New Build
The Orchard is a medium and enhanced-medium secure unit for 60 women (many coming out of Broadmoor Hospital), designed specifically in response to the Government's 'Into the Mainstream' strategy. The building, part of St Bernard's Hospital, Ealing, is unique in the UK, and was designed in close liaison with clinicians, managers and ward staff from Broadmoor Hospital and St Bernard's Hospital. Unusual challenges faced the design team: many of the patients are inclined to suicide and self-harm, and the building design and detailing was closely evaluated from this perspective. Many of the patients will not leave the unit, so achieving the required level of security for both the building and its outdoor spaces has been a major design driver. Tuke Manton worked on this project in partnership with Kier Build and Kier Health, who are Principal Supply Chain Partners within the NHS ProCure 21 strategy, of which this building was a part.
