Lower Ground Floor , 4 Jordan Street , Manchester , M15 4PY , United Kingdom
The ‘Entrance’ works consist of 29 front entrance staircases to 58no. apartments on the Arrowfield Estate in Chorlton. Each ‘Type H9’ property contains two apartments (one on ground floor, one on first floor). In addition to the front entrance remodelling, the rear of each property was provided with Juliette balconies and full height glazing to the first floor apartments, and full height glazing and a new glazed door providing access to the rear gardens for the ground floor apartments. The H9 properties have been plagued by vandalism and misuse over a number of years and it was strongly felt that the redesign of these entrances would help mitigate these problems. Our proposals ventured to afford greater visibility from the properties while developing a sense of ownership for the inhabitants by demarcating public and private space. A dramatic design proposal was felt necessary to lighten and revitalise the sullen street environment which at present plagues the area. The ‘Balcony’ works involved the remodelling of the rear of 62no. maisonette style apartments (Type H8) located within the Arrowfield Estate in Chorlton. As with the ‘Entrance’ works the H8 type maisonettes have management and crime issues and dramatic intervention was required to alleviate these issues. To achieve this, the existing brick balconies were removed and a new lightweight framed full height bays were provided. The bays create larger living rooms and provide greater light penetration into the space with full height windows which would further provide overlooking into the public open space to the rear of the dwellings and therefore increasing natural surveillance.
