In the heart of Notting Hill’s Portobello Road, we transformed a derelict house and retail unit into a light-filled contemporary home, retaining the original façades while rebuilding the internal structure and extending and adding a roof terrace. The design inverts the original layout, placing bedrooms on the first floor and an open-plan living/kitchen beneath a dramatic butterfly roof on the second. Historic character is preserved through the restored fireplace, while whitened timber ceilings, terrazzo worktops, and oak floors bring warmth and texture. Carefully crafted staircases, generous glazing, and dual-aspect spaces create a fluid, uplifting interior that evolves with daylight and the seasons.
