Founded in 1891, Trinity is the oldest hospice in the country. It occupies a terrace of listed Georgian houses overlooking Clapham Common and set within magnificent landscaped gardens. However, the facilities had become out-dated over time and in-patients were being cared for in multi-bedded rooms, which made clinical care difficult and isolated them from the activities housed in other parts of the facility. The project to modernise and extend the existing accommodation was a chance to alter the balance between out-patient services, day-care, home support and residential care. This was in line with recent trends in palliative care towards more individualised and less in-patient based solutions. Trinity were also very much aware that in any clinical environment, patients can feel isolated due to their unfamiliarity with the surroundings and working cultures. tp bennett was given the challenge of designing a facility that would encourage change in working practices and offer more comforting surroundings for patients and their families, whilst providing all the necessary clinical infrastructure required in a modern healthcare environment.
