The Foundry , 1 Adelaide Grove , LONDON , London , W12 0JU , United Kingdom
The Foundry is Timothy Hatton Architects' new studio in Shepherds' Bush, West London. The building was converted from several derelict industrial units into a split-level open plan workspace. Initially constructed with furnace and chimney, for the George Broad Sculpture Foundry in 1891, the practice was drawn to the specific quirks and characteristics within the brick-walled factory, as well the potential for its renovation. Replacing the roof with a zinc-clad saw tooth structure and excavating to the pre-urbanised ground level of the original terraced street enabled the design of two generous studio levels, the uppermost of which is flooded with light from a row of north-facing skylights and a large west facing window to the side. Two green courtyard spaces were retained and landscaped, one of which is adjacent to the Gallery entrance to the studio. The other courtyard provides a secluded outside space for the summer and year-round views from a double height meeting room and the kitchen / dining room.
