The brief to Timothy Hatton Architects for 14 St James’ Place was to demolish a former 1980s structure which had been built as office accommodation on top of an 18th century, Grade II listed building and to create a flexible space which could serve as both library and study and as an art gallery for the private residence below. The original structure was demolished, enabling THA to create a bigger, double height space, complete with reading platform and a sculptural, glass staircase which can be lit from beneath to dramatic effect. The gentle curve of the traditional mansard roof conceals an air conditioning duct and features three rooflights with infinite edge, providing uninterrupted views of the sky above. Three sides of the apartment are lined with continuous white plaster bookshelves and the gallery floor is constructed in steel and glass. This is detached from the walls to give the impression of weightlessness while also allowing light to penetrate the lower space, from above.
