The project is the first step towards the London Borough of Islington's goal of refurbishing and renewing all its leisure buildings. The complex project involved the refurbishment and redevelopment of the Grade II listed Ironmonger Row Baths, built in the 1930s. The development renews the two swimming pools and provides new changing facilities, replaces offices on the first and second floors with fitness studios and a large fitness gym, extends the Turkish Baths and improves circulation throughout the building. The £16M project involved major structural alterations, complete replacement of services and finishes, re-roofing and refurbishment of the exterior. The project also relates to wider ambitions for public space improvements to the adjacent gardens and for surrounding areas. Tim Ronalds Architects were appointed by London Borough of Islington to take the project to RIBA Stage F1, and were then novated to Wates Construction for the construction phase of the project. The project won a 2013 National RIBA Award, 2013 RIBA London Award, 2014 Civic Trust Award, as well as the AJ Retrofit (Civic & Community) Award.
