Listed Building - Grade II
Featured on Grand Designs 2009, and winner of a 2009 RIBA Award this project is the restoration and conversion of a grade 2 listed former stores building. A ruined and disparate collection of stone buildings nestled into a valley just outside Bath in Somerset is being sensitively restored and transformed into a modern family home. The design seeks to knit the 3 buildings together with a delicate ribbon like circulation route, placing the large open plan living spaces on the south side of the building overlooking the valley and the bedroom spaces on the cooler more private north side. Original features are being sensitively restored and modern insertions are made obvious by standing them away from the existing structure. Despite the restrictions imposed by the buildings listed status we have sought to integrate sustainable technologies where possible exploiting the ‘stack effect’ and the mass of the stone building to facilitate natural ventilation to cool the main spaces in summer, whilst in winter taking advantage of the lower sun angle to passively heat the spaces through the day.
