Threefold Architects have produced design proposals for a new build standalone luxury hotel suite as part of an historic Grade II listed Burgh Island Hotel on a coastal site in Devon. The new building occupies a dramatic site on a sea stack overlooking a calm seawater swimming pool to the west and the turbulent waters of the Bantham estuary to the east. The design has been inspired by the elemental nature of the site to create a unique building that emerges from the tectonic rocky landscape as a vessel to capture light and views. The structure is composed of 3 primary concrete ‘strata’ which elevate the building above the sea stack and organise the internal spaces, framing open views of the sea to the east, with a secondary ‘veil’ of finer brass fins adding an extra layer of privacy and solar shading from the pool views and sunshine to the west. The building contains a luxurious bedroom suite with dressing area, bathroom and study all looking over the estuary on the east side of the building, with a lounge and dining area with open fireplace on the west. The material palette is a paired back; expressing the exposed concrete structure, combined with warm timber joinery and accents of brass detailing as a reference to the nautical nature of the site.
