The first completed school under the BSF Initiative in the UK, SCIL is a purpose-built Special School in Smith?s Wood, Solihull. Merstone Special School and Forrest Oak School, from two areas of Solihull have been brought together on a single site and now share a single modern building which responds directly to the needs and aspirations of its occupants. The building comprises general classrooms, therapy rooms and a hydrotherapy pool connected by clearly legible circulation routes. The building is necessarily compact and efficient in terms of its floor plan and external envelope. Externally there are a variety of play spaces and gardens with associated car parking and landscaping. The building is geothermally heated and naturally ventilated. Generally materials chosen for the building are durable, practical and sustainable.
