The site was originally occupied by three buildings in a straight line along the road frontage of Hearne Way in Shrewsbury. These buildings comprised Severndale School Lower, a special school catering for pupils from 2-11years old. The central building was Wilfred Owen Primary School and the third building was Severndale Upper School for pupils from 11-19 years old. Severndale School separated by a different school is less than ideal and has restricted the opportunity of developing Severndale. Severndale School has a national reputation for the delivery of the highest standards of tuition and care to its pupils. Consequently it is over subscribed and in need of expansion. Monkmoor Campus comprises the relocation of Wilfred Owen School in to a new purpose built primary school which has been enlarged to encompass a nursery and extended hours children?s facility. The Health Authority are incorporating their Integrated Team for Children with Disabilities into the new building. Consequently, Monkmoor Campus will provide the broadest range of education and care to children and their families from the age of 2 to 19 years old. Horse-shoe in shape, the new building engages with the three exisiting buildings on the site to unify all of the buildings into a single edifice. The new links and refurbished existing buildings will accommodate the new enlarged Severndale School. The development is complicated by the need to keep both schools open throughout the works. Moss Construction have programmed the works in such a way as to ensure that this is the case with the minimum of disruption to the schools. This is a particularly complicated project with significant programming issues, however, by good communication and a collaborative approach amongst the design team, Moss Construction and the Design Champions from Shropshire County Council , the project was delivered on programme in November 2008.
