The practice was appointed as conservation architect for the restoration of the Grade 1 listed gallery and redisplay of the Silver Collection. Our multidisciplinary team including exhibition designers Ronayne:Design, graphic and lighting designers, interactive computer specialists and M&E engineers. Only 12 weeks was available in which to formulate the brief and prepare tender documents for this £1.2million project. The gallery had been devastated by the removal, in 1913, of the majolica column casings, gasoliers and the overpainting of the painted ceilings. Restoration and reinstatement of these features, together with the design of new casework, reservicing and security were the key parts of this project. The ceilings and frieze were cleaned and conserved and the majolica column casings were remanufactured. Archive photographs were used to recreate the original gasoliers. These now incorporate all of the Galleries' ambient and emergency lighting, and provide ventilation by utilising the original gaslight flues within the ceiling.
