New Build
The Gateway Project addressed a wide range of problems relating to the life and use of the cathedral. There was no level access at the main entrance - visitors descended a flight of 6 steps to enter the building and wheelchair users were obliged to enter by a remote side door. The open narthex was gloomy space which attracted a host of problems. Our radical solution replaced a windowless and claustrophobic link corridor with a new main entrance, accessible to all, and a created proper welcome-point for the Cathedral - something which it previously lacked. The angled entrance reinstated the historic pedestrian route between the city centre and the Cathedral and the enclosure of the former narthex created a space for the new Cathedral Shop. Inside the building, further access improvements including a platform lift, chair lift and ramp have provided wheelchair access to virtually the whole of the interior. The project also included a new natural stone nave floor and an insulated slab with underfloor heating, new bench seating, a flexible new LED lighting system, energy-efficient boilers, and a new sound system.
