Listed Building - Grade II*
Gravesend Pier is the world's oldest cast iron pier and is listed Grade 2* Gravesham Council had acquired the derelict pier to spearhead local regeneration and our task was both to restore the pier and to fund future maintenance costs through the creation of space for a commercial tenant. The structure, dating from 1834, had suffered from many years of insensitive alteration, neglect and a harsh marine environment. Later users had failed to understand that the original cast iron rainwater gutters and downpipes were an integral part of the structure and alterations had been made with disastrous consequences. Repairs involved the recording, dismantling, repair and renewal of a complex jigsaw of cast iron components. Repair techniques for ironwork included stitching, mechanical repair, complete and partial re-casting of components. Copper and zinc roof finishes and timber structure and decking were repaired and replaced where necessary. Health & Safety was an important issue due to the work being undertaken above frequently fast-flowing tidal waters. We also designed a new entrance pavilion at the landward end of the pier and a fit-out to provide public access, a new bar and a restaurant. Increasing public awareness was a key part of the project and our support included TV appearances, conducted tours, presentations, magazine articles and 3D images for the Council’s website.
